When I first heard of our tour to Lufthansa I thought we were going to visit the airline facilities, but later found out Lufthansa Technik is way bigger than just an airline company. Lufthansa Technik is a maintenance, repair and overhaul company. Their services include Aircraft, Engine, Component and Landing Gear services. Shortly after starting the tour, they showed us how an old-fashioned engine worked, which is very complicated. They showed us some VIP cabin for an aircraft that they later sold to the German government, which looked like a 5-star hotel’s president suite. Using Virtual Reality technology to design these types of planes, they make visualizations of how it will look like and implement changes based on the virtual reality apparatus. The primary function of Virtual Reality is to design the VIP cabins, which are very expensive due to the amount of non-required luxuries inside the cabin. At first, these planes were used for short trip purposes, but they’re now designing these planes for longer distances, specifically for the Berlin-Washington DC trip that the government constantly does.

With 21 plants all over the world, the largest engine repair station is in Hamburg. In order to work at the repair station, years of practice and training must be done, along with passing the test that gives you the license to be able to work on the company’s maintenance and repairs. This is just to ensure that only quality and skillful employees are the ones fixing the aircraft to ensure the best security. Overall, the tour was a very informative, enjoyable experience.
