By the time the sun started to rise, it was already 5 A.M. and my alarm started to go off. The famous “Fischmarkt” is open here in Hamburg every Sunday, so a group of us decided to go check it out. The early morning weather was beautiful with just a slight chilly breeze from the water. When we arrived, the smell of beer and fresh caught fish was surprisingly pleasant and almost intoxicating. Despite being so early, the scene was quite lively with the venders shouting to promote their goods. There was much more sold than just fish even though it’s called a fish market. From local produce to candy and kitchen cutlery, there was a variety of different things being sold down the line of kiosks.
Apparently, there is a tradition to stay up all night for the fish market, so there was a large crowd of people singing and dancing to a small concert at 6 A.M. I’m not accustomed to drinking beer early in the morning, so I opted for a hot cup of coffee instead. Daniel, wearing
his cheetah print shirt decided to get some orange juice in a watermelon cup. As our short trip to the market came to a close, he got a bunch of passion fruits to share with some of us to make the trip that much sweeter. It was a great to experience the local tradition on our last day here in Hamburg. Next up, Berlin!
